Guidelines for Levels
 
The Music Olympics are for students in preschool through 12th grade (not older than age 19 by June 1, 2012). The recommendations below are only "guidelines" to give you a general idea of where students might be placed. (See the Downloads page for exact details on each level.) Students should be placed at the level that is most appropriate (doable, yet still challenging) for their personal ability, regardless of number of years of lessons. (Your teacher will confirm what level you will enter at.) 
All students should be placed in the appropriate "A" or "B" level based on their age on the day of the Olympics if an A/B option is listed below.
 

Guidelines for Levels

Novice

A young beginner with about 12 lessons  (age 8 and under)

Primary A

A beginner with about one year of lessons  (age 8 and under)

Primary B

A beginner with about one year of lessons  (age 9 and over)

Elementary A

One to two years of lessons  (age 9 and under)

Elementary B

One to two years of lessons  (age 10 and over)

Lower Intermediate A

Two to four years of lessons  (age 10 and under)

Lower Intermediate B

Two to four years of lessons  (age 11 and over)

Intermediate A

A student with around 4 years of lessons who is playing Middle Intermediate repertoire  (age 12 and under)

Intermediate B

A student with around 4 years of lessons who is playing Middle Intermediate repertoire  (age 13 and over)

Upper Intermediate

A student who has competed well in Lower Intermediate or Intermediate levels, and is playing easy sonatas and Bach Inventions

Lower Advanced

A student who has competed well in the Intermediate levels, and is playing easy sonatas and Bach Inventions

Advanced

A high school student who has excelled beyond the Upper Intermediate level, and is playing Mozart or Beethoven Sonatas and the works of Chopin, etc.
